Suhua Highway Reopened
Repairing work of the storm-ravaged Suhua highway has been completed ahead of schedule, enabling the route to be reopened on Sunday afternoon. In order to restore drivers' faith in its safety, the authorities announced that around-the-clock surveillance has already been set up at three sites along the road, and the Hualien County government now even offers free hotel coupons to attract more visitors from the north.
It's the day that truck drivers have waited for weeks.
Since the Suhua highway resumes its traffic, they don't have to spend additional six hours making a detour.
Although the highway reopens to traffic now, many drivers are still cautious when driving through certain sections.
On the first working day after the highway resumes its traffic, there are only a few trucks and empty tour buses using it.
To restore the public's faith in the highway, Directorate General of Highway has monitoring staff stationed at three locations near 112.8 kilometer mark for 24 hours everyday.
The traffic authority will continue its effort in installing surveillance cameras, LCD display panels for real-time traffic information updates and emergency phones throughout the whole highway.
Hoteliers in Taroko Gorge came up with heavy incentives, offering free lucky draw to visitors, who may take home gifts including souvenirs and free hotel coupons.
Besides that, internationally renowned St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra is invited to Hualien for charity performance, which will be presented outdoor along with fireworks display, as part of events to celebrate the resumption of Suhua highway.
