The number of new immigrants is on the rise in Taiwan but life has not been easy for them. They not only need to learn the language but also need to fit in the Taiwanese community and find a way to support the family.

A social welfare group for foreign spouses has selected some role models among these new immgirants to share with others their journey of starting a new life in Taiwan.

Let's take a look at their stories on CTS.

Su An-nee, a native of Cambodia, married a Taiwanese man in 2003 and gave birth to a child.

But the family has another two children, born to her husband by his former wife, who is from Vietnam.

Last year, her husband died of illness and she has to support the family on her own by running a small barber shop.

With a tough spirit, she lives in her new hometown with the three kids.

The Pearl S. Buck Foundation, which has long provided services to inter-racial families and especially to such single parents, has chosen her as this year's role model for new immigrants.

Another winner is Huang Wei-yan from Vietnam.

Her husband came down with cancer and she raises the family by doing odd jobs and getting social assistance.

Huang is a devoted Chinese learner because she wants to help her two kids with homework.

Just like any mothers, these two new immigrant spouses need to take care of their family while integrating into society.

Although there's a lot of hardship during the process, they simply wish their children can grow up healthily and become a useful and effective adult in the society.
