Praying for Beauty
The Kai-hua Temple in Zhang-hua City worships two gods that are widely believed to be able to treat people's skin problems. Many are bringing their cosmetics to the temple instead of the usual offerings.
The ladies walk into the Kai-hua Temple with incense in their hands. Instead of bringing flowers and fruits as offerings, they have brought cosmetics such as lotion, lipstick, eyeliner, foundation and powder.
What are these ladies worshiping? It turns out they have come for the gods that are believed to bless people with beautiful looks. These two gods were said to be couples during the Qing Dynasty, when they were treating patients with smallpox.
Their treatment was so effective that their patients recovered from smallpox without scars. To memorize them, people worshiped them in the temple. Nowadays with the government's successful vaccination projects, this infectious disease has been eradicated.
People have come to the temple in order to become more attractive. Young ladies come in order to have a glowing, smooth skin while young men come for a better charisma. Even some parents bring their teenage kids to the temple to treat the pimples on their faces.
