Fruit-flavored shaved ice is among the hottest selling desserts in Taipei during the summer, even as prices have skyrocketed to over 100 NT dollars a plate. However, some of Taipei's shaved ice dishes have been reportedly found to be contaminated by bacteria, which is currently under the investigation by the city's Department of Health.

Taipei City Department of Health workers are inspecting mango ice eateries around the city in the wake of media reports that the ice used at many eateries have high live bacteria counts.

After the owner of this 50-year old eatery in Ximending explains the preparation process, DOH workers test the storage temperatures of various ingredients.

A bowl of ice, meanwhile, is placed in a vacuum-sealed bag and transported back to the lab.

According to the media, the ice at "Peanut Corn Ice" and Wanhua's famous "Eight Treasures Ice" have live bacteria counts 2.4 and 10 times higher, respectively, than the legal standard.

Media reports also say that store employees fail to wear gloves while processing and serving the ice.

The eateries named in the article say that they have been unjustly accused, and the Department of Health's report, which will be released in 10 days, will reveal whether their claims are true.
