Plant Relocation Impacts
A CPC refinery plant in Kaohsiung is scheduled to be relocated in 2015, raising concerns that the impact on related industries may leave thousands jobless. To prevent the crisis, authorities are planning to create an industrial corridor to promote cross-industry cooperation in the Greater Kaohsiung area.
White smoke is coming from these tall chimneys as this facility, the CPC Kaohsiung Houchin Plant, covers an area of 400 hectares.
Due to concerns from local citizens, this facility will be relocated in 2015. However, the local industry has begun to worry about the Renda Industrial Park on the periphery of this plant, which may see rising unemployment.
The industry wants to be proactive, and have an early response to industry changes, also using the merger of Greater Kaohsiung with the city government commissioning academics to plan for major industrial areas such as Ganshan and Renda to undertake industry collaboration.
Currently Kaohsiung's Linhai Industrial Park, Nanzih Processing Zone, and the Kaohsiung County's Yong An Renwu Dafa Industrial District have a low degree of industry cooperation with scholars believing in order for the industry to upgrade,
they will need to establish an industrial chain including Tainan, Kaohsiung, and Pingtung.
