Jobs for the Needy
In assisting students from low-income families, the Kaohsiung City Government has arranged more than 500 summer opportunities.
Held by the city's Labor Education Center, the limited spots has pulled in close to 1,800 students, all in hope for a head start in the workforce.
The long line started forming early in the morning outside Kaohsiung City's Labor Education Center. These young job seekers are actually all college students.
Some have just entered college, but are all here to try to get a summer job with a government entity. Even parents came with their children to apply.
These summer jobs pay NT$100 per hour and can pay up to 176 hours per month, which is quite well. The 557 positions provide better opportunities than other private summer jobs.
Although it's only a summer job, college graduates are now finding it hard to find jobs and usually only start out at NT$22,000 per month.
All the students are hoping to gain job experience that will help them land jobs when they graduate. Others are hoping to become public servants and are using this opportunity to get to know the government work environment.
