Radio broadcasters from China and Taiwan recently met to share their experiences. While the freedom and diversity of Taiwan's radio industry are admired by members of its cross-strait counterpart, the challenges it is facing may be more than the Chinese broadcasters can imagine.

Broadcasters across the Taiwan Strait say that mutual exchange has led some broadcasters to complain bitterly that the state of broadcast media in Taiwan is in dire straits making it difficult to survive year after year.

China, in contrast has not opened broadcast media or state-owned enterprises as China National Radio has a fixed audience of 700 million listeners leading the broadcast media in Taiwan to be envious of the other side.

Taiwan scholars believe that Taiwan has nearly 200 channels with the National Communications Commission likely releasing more than 100 channels for bidding.

Many worry that this could lead to vicious competition, which coupled with digital broadcast trends could make the industry worse.

Chen Ching-He says that Taiwan's broadcasting policy heavily favors television and continues to have difficulty keeping up with new media trends.

With more competition and an inability keep up with digital trends, the future development of Taiwan's broadcasting industry will be cause for concern.
