Attitudes Matter
A large-scale job fair opened this weekend in Taichung, claiming to offer 6,000 employment opportunities. However, some criticize that events like this are more about hype than results, with a very low average percentage of openings filled, while others believe the real problem lies in the attitude of job seekers.
Miss Cheng who just graduated from college with a major in finance has not been able to find a job since March of this year after applied to more than 40 companies. A high tech company with over 1,000 job openings got the attention of many job seekers, however, employers are not happy with how college grads were so unstable in the past few years.
Many criticized that large job fairs are like a religious temple celebration where only 20% of the applicants would match the openings with the problem of those 20% of people changing jobs afterwards. The central district job-training bureau pointed out that, the job fairs only can provide opportunities; the key is the attitudes of the young applicants.
This event saw a major problem of lack of confidence in many young applicants for they are not willing to work at entry level positions and would rather choose low paid service industry jobs instead of high tech service support job that pays up to NT$40,000 per month. This situation created a problem of employers not able to find workers and job applicants not finding the jobs they want.
