NASA DISCOVERS A "NEW EARTH?"
A group of scientists have announced earlier this week about their discovery of an Earth-like planet located in the "Habitable" zone, which may be capable of supporting life.
The planet, named as Kepler 22-b, is located 600 light years from earth, and is about 2.4 times the size of our own planet, with an average temperature of 22 degrees Celsius.
Kepler 22-b lies 15 percent closer to its sun than the Earth is to our Sun, and its year takes about 290 days. The planet's host star is about 25 percent less luminous than our Sun, keeping the planet at a suitable temperature that would support the existence of liquid water, which is necessary for life, as we know it.
It is unknown if Kepler 22-b is made of rock, gas or liquid.
Still, according to the excited scientists, the finding is a major milestone on the road to finding Earth's twin, while Alan Boss at the Carnegie Institute said quote: "This discovery supports the growing belief that we live in a universe crowded with life."
