STARS HELP LIGHT UP NYC
With Justin Bieber and Usher singing a Christmas tune, it's beginning to look a little like Christmas in New York.
Justin Bieber, Usher, Michael Buble, Tony Bennett and Katharine McPhee helped ring in the holiday season for New York last week at the annual ceremony to light the Rockefeller Christmas tree.
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg helped illuminate the 74-foot-tall Norway spruce from a small town in Pennsylvania, decorated with 30,000 lights.
Buble, who gave one of the ceremony's festive performances, shared why the day is special to him.
"Christmas is a pretty special time for me, and not unlike many people, my mom and dad and my family gave us a ton of love and made it really special."
"So, I get really sentimental about it. It's kind of this really cool time where even the most cynical people, somehow their heart melts a little bit and they're just a little kinder to each other."
American Idol star Katherine McPhee was proud to be part of the Christmas tradition:"I try and watch the Christmas tree lighting special every year, but last year in particular I remember specifically sitting at home watching it."
"I've done a lot of specials, but I don't think I ever thought I would do the Christmas tree lighting special."
Tens of thousands of people swarmed in to the area surrounding the Rockefeller Center for the lightning ceremony, which was held first back in 1933.
Deb Keller, who donated the tree, also attended the ceremony.
"It's just a very surreal moment"
"We've talked about this for years, how this would make the perfect Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, and here we are."
The tree will stay with New Yorkers until January 7th and will later be turned into lumber for the housing charity Habitat for Humanity.
