"IMMORTALS" TOPS BOX OFFICE
The Greek Gods conquered the past weekend box office, as the epic action film "Immortals" debuted at 32.2 million US dollars. It was the third biggest opening this year for an R-rated film and the best for a non-sequel. Comparing to other similar films, it scored less than half of "300"'s 70.
9 million US dollars, and was also way off from "Clash of the Titans"'s 61.2 million US dollars. Opening above industry expectations, Immortals received mixed reviews from critics, but successfully connected with action and fantasy fans, who gave a "B" CinemaScore.
No. 2 went to the family comedy, "Jack and Jill," which claimed 25 million US dollars on its opening weekend. The box office for this film is much lower than other films by Adam Sandler, and slightly higher than Sandler's worst film Funny People's 22.6 million US dollars.
Starred by Adam Sandler, El Pacino and Katie Holmes, the film tells the story of Jack, a successful advertising executive in Los Angeles, who has a beautiful wife and kids. His life is interrupted after his twin sister, Jill decides to visit them for Thanksgiving. Jill is about to turn Jack's normal life upside down with her extreme neediness and passive-aggressiveness.
Even though critics slammed "Jack and Jill" with some of their harshest words, moviegoers were somewhat satisfied with Sandler's jokes as the film received a "B" CinemaScore. Despite the atrocious reviews, "Jack and Jill" is likely to continue to bring in respectable grosses as no new comedies will open over the next three weeks.
Following close behind at No. 3 was two-time box office leader "Puss in Boots," which dipped a light 25% to 24.7 million US dollars. The 3D animation has grossed a remarkable 108 million US dollars so far. But it will face tough competition with "Happy Feet Two" and "The Muppets" coming to theaters next weekend.
No.4 went to "Tower Heist," which fell 47 percent to 12.8 million US dollars for a total of 43.5 million US dollars. Thanks to Tower Heist's grosses, distributor Universal Pictures passed 1 billion US dollars mark for the year this past Saturday. This is the first year Universal has reached this milestone since 2008, and it's the fifth studio to do so in 2011 after Paramount, Warner Bros., Disney and Sony.
Clint Eastwood's latest film "J Edgar" debuted in fifth place. Starred by Leonardo DiCaprio, the biopic raked in 11.2 million US dollars. The R-rated drama, which received a "B" CinemaScore, unveils the life, career and secrets of J. Edgar, once the most powerful man in the U.S., and also the head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation for almost 50 years.
In order to bring to life J. Edgar Hoover in the film, Leonardo DiCaprio spent months, and countless hours in the makeup chair. It is also widely believed that DiCaprio will likely to earn his fourth Oscar nomination with his performance in J. Edgar.
