TAIWAN TO PROTEST OVER WHO NAMING ISSUE
Earlier this week, DPP lawmaker Guan Bi-ling demanded the Ma administration to withdraw from the upcoming World Health Assembly in protest of the fact that the WHO has listed Taiwan as "province of China" in its internal document, which Guan obtained from undisclosed sources. In response, the government said that while it will express strong objection over the issue, Taiwan will still participate the WHA this year.
Health Minister Chiu Wen-da is about to lead a delegation to attend the 64th World Health Assembly in Geneva from May 16th to 24th.
But DPP lawmaker Guan Bi-lin discloses an internal document of the World Health Organization, issued on September 14th last year.
In which it says that the World Health Organization and China have signed a memorandum in 2005, agreeing on Taiwan's status in the WHA as a province of China.
The document was even signed by an high-ranking WHO official.
The legislator worries that it may become the pattern in which Taiwan joins world organizations.
So she asked the government to not send the delegation to Geneva for the conference.
Health Minister Chiu Wen-da showed the press the invitation he received from the WHO.
He will lead the delegation in his capacity as minister for the assembly meeting, where Taiwan joins as an observer in the name of Chinese Taipei.
During the meeting, Chiu will convey the objection on behalf of the country.
Facing the blast from opposition lawmakers, Chiu stressed that he would not give up the opportunity to attend the WHA, where he would fight for a chance for Taiwan to join the international disease prevention network.
