TSAI ON WHO NAMING DISPUTE
In response to the recent dispute over Taiwan being positioned as a "province of China" by the World Health Organization, DPP Chairperson Tsai Ing-wen said that it should not be taken lightly, worrying that the international status of Taiwan would be seriously affected as a result.
Days before the World Health Assembly convene its annual meeting, an internal memo of the WHO was disclosed, which asks WHO agencies to be kept aware that Taiwan is a "Province of China."
At a meeting with visitors, President Ma Ying-jeou said that Taiwan was able to get an observership at the WHA in the name of Chinese Taipei.
Now both cross-strait representatives are addressed as "minister" at the world meeting.
DPP presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen says this would affect Taiwan's diplomatic maneuver in the future.
World Health Assembly has always been an important battle field between cross-strait foreign affair operatives.
While Taiwan had been trying hard to get in, only until 2009 when Yen Jin-chuan was health minister, Taiwan was able to get an observership under the name of Chinese Taipei.
Last year, Taiwan attended the WHA meeting as an observer under the name of Chinese Taipei.
Then Health Minister Yaung Chi-liang attended the meeting on behalf of Taiwan.
This year, incumbent health minister Chiu Wen-da is invited to participate in the same event in the same standard.
But the accidental disclosure of the internal document has created a stir in the cross-strait diplomatic tug of war.
