SURVEY SHOWS 70% WOMEN WON'T TAKE MATERNITY LEAVE FOR FEAR OF LOSING JOBS
The government may think that ensuring the right of women to adequate maternity leave would help to boost the sagging birth rates, but the result seems to prove otherwise. A recent survey by a local job bank shows that more than 70% of working women eligible for maternity leave would give up this right for fear of losing their jobs.
Sherry, a mother of two, is currently on maternity leave and staying at home to care for her children full-time.
Her company has assured her that she will be able to return to her old position after she comes back from maternity leave.
However, not every professional woman is this fortunate.
Sandy, who is in retail, is concerned that after she returns from maternity leave, she will not get back her old position.
According to an investigation conducted by human resource agencies, 70% of working women who qualify for maternity leave do not take it for fear that they will not be able to keep their current job after they return.
Statistics by womens rights groups have found that after the government implemented a policy allowing maternity leaves, discrimination against professional women ironically worsened.
According to an analysis by womens rights groups, the well-intentioned government policy allowing maternity leaves have caused professional women to be afraid to take maternity leaves and they have no desire to have children.
If the government wishes to encourage more women to have children, they will have to adopt a more comprehensive set of policies protecting professional women.
