ANTI-POVERTY DEMONSTRATION IN TAIPEI
But the government's satisfaction with its labor reforms apparently wasn't shared by many labor groups, who staged a massive demonstration in Taipei last Sunday in protest of widening wealth gap and low minimum wage. The protesters said that the Ma administration must offer concrete solutions to Taiwan's poverty issues, otherwise the people would have no choice but to give their support to the opposition party.
A loud whistle marks this Anti-Poverty Labor Day march as more than 6,000 people took to the streets.
Many young people feel the heavy burden of their work. They were hoping the government could raise minimum wage by 5% to 22,115 NT dollars.
As part of the protest, many people napped in front of The Palace. Many were unhappy with the widening gap between rich and poor as they held signboards expressing these sentiments for President Ma to see as they approached the Presidential Palace.
These groups also want to help the economically disadvantaged, enhancing the quality of life, and putting forth 14 demands before the Ma Administration ahead of next year's election.
They also encouraged everyone to use their ballots to support labor policies.
