DISCUSSION TO START ON CROSS-STRAIT NUCLEAR SAFETY COOPERATION
In the wake of the Fukushima disaster, President Ma has proposed to include nuclear safety as a high priority topic in the next round of negotiations with China, which also expressed interests in cross-strait cooperation in this field. And preliminary discussions are expected to start during the upcoming Annual KMT-CPC Forum at Chengdu in early May.
The Fukushima nuclear disaster of Japan has worried neighboring countries, who are afraid of getting radiation pollution from Japan. President Ma indicates that China is closer to Taiwan and houses several nuclear power plants on the coastal area. If any nuclear accidents happen, Taiwan would be directly impacted.
So the two sides need to negotiate on nuclear safety issue.
The Straits Exchange Foundation has talked to its Chinese counterpart ARATS, hoping to include the nuclear safety issue in the seventh Chiang-Chen meeting.
Before that, the KMT announces to add the issue in the agenda of this year's cross-strait Trade culture forum from May 6th to 8th in Chengdu.
Beijing makes positive comments on the nuclear safety exchanges across the straits. Mainland China's Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson Fan Li-ching says that Beijing is willing to collaborate with Taiwan in setting up a nuclear disaster warning system to enhance disaster-prevention capabilities through a regular mutual aid mechanism. If needed from both sides, they welcome more discussion on the issue.
