A GIFTED INSTRUMENT CRAFTSMAN
While talented musical performers can often be seen on Youtube these days, truly gifted instrument craftsmen are a lot harder to find. But a man in Yunlin happens to possess such a rare expertise. It takes him just 20 minutes to transform an ordinary plastic tube into a pan flute. And he even offers free instrument-playing lessons to his customers.
In less than 20 minutes, Ting Mi-hung transforms this ordinary plastic pipe into a working pan flute.
The Yunlin native was sent by his father to Taipei County's Sanchong to study musical instrument manufacturing at the age of 15, and he is now renowned for an array of instruments ranging from pan flutes, erhus, and zithers to electric guitars and drums.
Ting has even crafted a rare taishogoto, which is a combination western-eastern instrument, as well as an erhu from coconut shells.
His creativity knows no bounds, and he frequently travels into the mountains to collect bamboo and wood.
Ting travels around the island selling his instruments from the back of his truck, and offers free musical lessons to customers.
He says that he wants to share his passion and expertise and allow everyone to experience the vitality of music.
