Chiang Kai-shek's residence in Shilin has become a tourist attraction after the government partially opened the area in 2006. In order to give the public a closer look into the life of the former leader, Taipei City Government will be making the main building available, where Chiang and his wife lived from 1950 to 1975.

Taipei's historic official Shilin residence was opened in 1996 with the Victoria Chapel and the Ciyun Pavilion as well as the surrounding park opened to guests.

The area also has beautiful flowers for many to enjoy as the area attracts many tourists, but to truly understand the life of Chiang Kai-shek and Madame Chiang, one has to enter the main building of this residence.

The main building has a dark green two-story pitched roof and has become integrated with a nearby tree.

It is hidden amongst this five-hectare garden from Chiang Kai-shek from 1950 to his death in 1975 stayed here. For 26 years this building witnessed many important moments in modern Chinese history.

The main building's most important area is the visiting room for guests where these two chairs frequently saw Chiang Kai-shek sit in the one on the left side, and Madame Chiang sit on the right.

Important leaders from around the world would meet here and a Sino-US defense treaty was signed here.

The furnishings of the residence have been maintained and are original, including Chiang's favorite ebony furniture.

The building has a distinct Chinese style with cinnabar red vases and table lamps and Madame Chiang's favorite landscape paintings.

The main building was dilapidated and suffered from a termite problem, and in September last year, there was also a fire and this October work was finally finished.

After lots of effort, it will be opened to the public on January 2 of next year, allowing everyone the chance to learn more about the mystery of the Chiang family.
