Free Rehab Treatments for Elders
In caring for our senior citizens in Taiwan, the Taipei Medical University, is committed to make their lives better. It has set up the first senior health center on the island to provide free rehabilitation treatments for those in need.
Grooving along enthusiastically to the music is an 82-year-old grandma.
It's hard to imagine that she had before suffered an injury to her spine and was unable to walk for a long period of time.
She says that besides being able to stand on her own and carrying out daily routines, exercise has become an essential part of her life.
Ninety-year-old Mr. Liu who once went through an invasive heart surgery is also gradually recovering by singing and engaging in boxing exercise.
With the economy booming, medical technology is also advancing.
The average life span of Taiwans citizens is increasing and population senility rate is becoming the lowest in the world.
In order to improve elderly care, the Taipei Medical University has taken Japanese community health stations as an example and set up Taiwan's first senior health center.
At the referral of medical doctors, elders with illnesses will be able to visit the center to receive free health rehabilitation treatments.
The center will not only provide long-term care for patients with chronic diseases, it will also provide psychiatric assistance to those suffering from dementia and depression.
As of now, the center is providing these services completely free of charge.
Hopefully it can become a model for the outline of Taiwan's future long-term health care insurance system.
