Nonmilitary Facets of Matsu
For another great view, check out the historic military bases and facilities in Matsu. Tourists now can get a full on experience by exploring the past trails and tunnels taken by the soldiers.
Gun drills are still being held in a precise and timely manner.
But they are no longer for military purpose since the tensions between Taiwan and Mainland China ease recently.
Instead the drills are a tourism attraction.
A trip to Matsu is not complete without visiting the various tunnels which were dug by soldiers for cover and concealment.
You would be amazed by how difficult the projects were by taking a closer look at the tunnels.
Thanks to years of natural weathering, the famous Beihai Tunnel and Wusha Tunnel have presented spectacular geographical landscapes.
The former military tunnels are now opened to the public, where visitors can even take a boat to explore the beauty of the tunnels.
Given the cool temperature, the tunnels are developed into wine cellars, making the Tunnel 88 a famous brand nationwide.
Qinbi village is situated next to a coastal inlet with houses facing out to sea and backed onto the hillside. The view resembles the Mediterranean features.
Besides various sites to visit, Matsu also has some delicious local foods, such as the so-called Matsu Hamberger "Ji-guang pastry" and chewy fish noodles.
Without the military burden, Matsu is now reinventing itself into a tourist destination.
