Bot Rating Hotels
The Bureau of Tourism recently spent 30 million NT on a rating program for domestic hotels, which includes reviewers posing as regular guests for more reliable evaluation. At this stage, only 40 out of 2600 hotels in Taiwan have signed up to participate, while the others are still mulling whether they are up to the challenge.
In the future, domestic hotels won't be able to set their own star rating. The Bureau of Tourism recently hired 30 experts to pose as hotel guests and rate different hotels on criteria including decor, dining, and service. At the earliest, the full results of the survey, including which hotels are "real" 5-star hotels, will be released in September.
19 hotels have received at least a 3-star rating so far, including Taichung's The Sun and Taipei's Sheraton, Landis, Hotel Royal Chihpen, and Miramar Garden. Many hotels are eager to take on the challenge of impressing the experts, but only 40 of Taiwan's 2,600 hotels chose to take part in the first phase of reviews.
Most say that they are waiting to see whether the evaluation process is fair, but hotels that fail to submit to a review and set their own star rating may be subject to false advertising fines in the future.
