New Coin Unveiled
We are going to see a new face on the coins very soon. A new 10 NT coin in honor of Chiang Wei-shui, a pioneer of democracy in Taiwan, will be issued on the fifth of August, the 79th anniversary of his death. This marks the first time in Taiwan that someone other than an ex-president is featured on coins circulating nationwide.
A new 10 NT coin bearing the image of Taiwans national hero Chiang Wei-shui was unveiled on Thursday by the Central Bank. Chiangs eldest grandson was also present to witness the historic moment. Chiang is just the fourth man in the history of ROC to be featured on a coin in wide circulation, following Dr. Sun Yat-sen, Chiang Kai-shek, and Chiang Ching Kuo. The selection of Chiang as theme seems to break the long tradition of coin design that previously honored ex-presidents only.
Aside from its historical significance, the new coin boasts of sophisticated anti-counterfeit features. There are latent images and characters on the coin that change as they are viewed from different angles. The first batch of the new coin, scheduled to be issued on August 5th, will number 50 million pieces. The descendants of Chiang hope that through their circulation, the life and legacy of their ancestor will be introduced to younger generations. And they also expect to see a greater diversity of themes on Taiwans coins.
