BIEBER, CARLY RAE JEPSEN'S BOSS?
Canadian singer Carly Rae Jepsen is three times lucky. Her catchy single "Call Me Maybe" has topped the UK music charts for the third week in a row. It's also reached number one in five countries, including her native Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.
Carly Rae Jepsen: "It's amazing to me the success that 'Call Me Maybe' has had. I can't say that I pictured it would happen like this or for this particular song. You write a bunch and you don't know what's going to catch fire." The singer placed third on Canadian Idol, helping her get national recognition.
But it wasn't until fellow Canadian Justin Bieber heard her song and tweeted it did she find global fame. He called on his girlfriend Selena Gomez and friend Ashley Tisdale to lip-sync the song in a video and put it up on on YouTube, which racked up 22 million hits. He then signed her to Schoolboy Records/Interscope, the label he runs with his manager Scooter Braun.
Carly Rae Jepsen: "Justin has mostly just been an amazing supporter. He seems to sort of like the music I'm doing and the artist that I am and hasn't said much other than I want to help you, kind of show your music outside of Canada." The quirky music video has also racked up 33 million hits, no doubt because of the twist at the end and thanks in part to director Ben Knechtel.
Carly Rae Jepsen: "He (music video director Ben Knechtel) knew I wanted to do something light and comical. Picking Holden Nowell, the lead guy, sort of... it drew some inspiration for us."Her latest EP "Curiosity" is out now.
