"DEVIL INSIDE" SCREAMS UP $33.7 M
This week's new release "The Devil Inside" crushed even the most generous forecasts this weekend, by easily claiming the first place and defeating the four-time No.1, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol.
Produced for less than 1 million US dollars and distributed by Paramount's Insurge label, "The Devil Inside" scared up 33.7 million US dollars across the country.
The R-rated horror flick tells the story about a young woman, who finds out that her mother was possessed by demons two decades earlier. "The Devil Inside" is the third-highest January opening ever, only behind Cloverfield's 40.1 million US dollars and the Star Wars-Special Edition's re-release at 35.9 million US dollars.
"Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" dropped down to second place after leading the box office for the past few weeks. The movie eased just 33 percent to 19.9 million US dollars, and it has now made an impressive 169.6 million US dollars.
By early next weekend, the fourth installment in the popular franchise will have surpassed the original movie's 181 million US dollars, and it has a great chance at topping Mission: Impossible II's 215.4 million US dollars to become the highest-grossing installment in the series.
"Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" also held well this weekend at No.3. The sequel was off 35 percent to 13.7 million US dollars, and has so far made more than 157 million US dollars. It has closed the gap with the first "Sherlock Holmes" to 23 million, though it's unlikely that the movie will close over 200 million US dollars.
"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" earned 11.4 million US dollars on its third weekend at No.4. The movie has now earned 76.9 million US dollars, and distributor Sony indicated that the company is expecting the film to ultimately pass 100 million US dollars.
No. 5 was "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked," which raked in 9.5 million US dollars this weekend. The movie passed the 100-million mark on Wednesday, and has so far grossed 111.6 million US dollars.
