CHINA'S POVERTY LINE RAISED
China has modified its rural poverty line from 55 cents to 1 US dollar, which is 6.5 yuan a day. According to the new standard, around 128 million people will be classified as rural poor, who will then be qualified to receive social welfare benefits such as subsides, job training, and employment opportunities.
Rural poverty has always been Chinese President Hu Jintao's main challenge in running the country. He has offered large-scale development projects across China's poorest provinces. In his recent talk to the media, Hu said that the government will ensure poor people's access to compulsory education, basic medical care and housing by 2020, in a bid to build a harmonious country.
