BREIVIK APPEARS IN FIRST PUBLIC HEARING
Anders Behring Breivik, the man behind the shooting massacre in July, that tramatized the country of Norway and took the lives of 77 people, appeared for the first public court hearing.
The 32-year-old Norwegian right-wing extremist , who pleaded not guilty to his brutal crime, was stopped by Judge Torkjel Nesheim when he tried to give a speech describing himself as the "commander" of a Norwegian resistance movement.
The judge again interrupted Breivik when he asked to address survivors and victims' relatives, with the judge stating, "This was not the main trial where he gets to explain himself. I did not want to give him the opportunity to use this hearing as a platform for him to express his views."
A reporter said that Breivik was very calm at the hearing, while "the atmosphere was tense and strange" with the courtroom packed with people, including survivors of the bloody rampage.
The hearing was to decide whether to keep Breivik in jail until his trial in the spring. The judge said the criminal trial is set to begin in March or April.
Breivik has confessed in carrying out the two attacks in Oslo and Utoeya Island, which killed 77 people, but has denied any terror charges. Breivik called his actions, "necessary" to save Norway and Europe from Muslims and multiculturalism.
