"PUSS" TOPS U.S. WEEKEND BOX OFFICE
You dont wan't to make the cat angry". The animated comedy "Puss in Boots" debuted at number one as other films failed to generate much excitement over the past weekend at an estimated 34 million US dollars. Even with the high numbers in the box office, the result is still significantly lower than "Shrek Forever After" at 70.8 million US dollars.
Despite the slow start, "Puss in Boots" is likely to rake in more ticket sales with its quite impressive A-CinemaScore.
After scoring the best opening ever during the September to October corridor, horror flick "Paranormal Activity 3" fell sharply in its second week to an estimated 18.5 million US dollars only. Even so, the third installment of the lucrative franchise has already earned 84.8 million US dollars.
Justin Timberlake's sci-fi thriller "In Time" opened in third spot with a mediocre 12 million US dollars. According to cinema estimates, the film attracted evenly across genders.
The dance remake "Footloose" followed in fourth place with an estimated 5.4 million US dollars, down 48% to a total ticket sale at 38.4 million US dollars.
Johnny Depp's new film, "The Rum Diary" stumbled into fifth place with 5 million US dollars. The film, which is an adaptation of Hunter Thomson's novel, follows the story of the American journalist, who takes on a freelance job in Puerto Rico for a local newspaper during the 1950s.
Paul Kemp, played by Depp, struggles to find a balance between island culture and the expatriates who live there. Even with the presence of Depp and co-star Aaron Eckhart, the film still failed to impress critics and even ticket buyers.
