THE UPSIDE OF SHOPPING
A domestic survey indicates that seniors who go for shopping everyday actually live longer and are healthier than those who go shopping once a week. The activity is even more beneficial to male seniors.
Shopping is not only a way to alleviate stress and anxiety, but also a great way for seniors to achieve better health.
According to a 10-year study conducted by the National Health Research Institutes over 1800 seniors on the relationship between their health and their shopping behaviors, it shows that the more often they go shopping, the healthier they are.
Senior males who go for a walk around the mall every day have 27% lower death risks than those who shop only once a week, while senior females who go shopping everyday have 23% lower risks of death than those who seldom shop.
The research team also found an interesting fact regarding elderly citizens shopping behavior, which is the less wealthy elders are, the more they love to go for a walk around the mall, because window shopping doesn't cost a dime.
Researchers conclude the reason is probably because that shopping increases elder peoples physical activity.
It is also beneficial to their psychological well-being because having contact with other people increases seniors social engagement.
