The younger demographic may soon have a bigger role to play in Taiwan's elections. A KMT legislator proposed yesterday that the legal voting age should be lowered from 20 to 18 in order to encourage more young people to get involved in the democratic process. The Ministry of the Interior said it is basically in favor of such a change, and will start discussions on the issue with legal experts next week.

KMT lawmaker Ding Shou-chung proposed to change current voting age from 20 to 18, saying that it's a world trend to lower the voting age since up to 178 out of 195 countries of the world adopt the voting age of 18.

But according to the article no. 130 in the Constitution, citizens of the Republic of China have the right to vote after 20.

So it requires the constitutional amendment to lower the voting age.

Some scholars believe this result could also be achieved through the legislative yuan's request of an interpretation from the grand justice or simply through amending the Election and Recall law.

Ministry of the Interior, which is in charge of the matter, is now planning to lower the voting age to 18 and it would have a meeting next week to discuss with legal experts and scholars on the issue.
