DPP LIN TAI-HUA CLAIMS VICTORY
The DPP candidate Lin Tai-hua has claimed her victory at the legislative by-election after garnering more than 53,000 votes in Greater Kaoshiung, significantly defeating her opponent, KMT candidate Hsu Ching-huang, who only received about half of her vote. While Lin is looking positively toward the upcoming elections, Hsu blamed himself for the loss, adding that the KMT party has done everything to support him in the race.
At around 5:20 Saturday evening, before the Central Election Commission announced the election results, DPP candidate for legislative by-election in Greater Kaohsiung Lin Tai-hua announced her victory.
Three years ago, she lost the national legislative elections and this victory is a much-needed boost for her political career.
She received more than 53,000 votes, twice of the votes of her rival Hsu Ching-hua, who only got 23,000 votes.
Hsu said he didn't work hard enough and the loss has nothing to do with the party central's campaign efforts.
KMT lost the in the third district of Kaohsiung three years ago and the percentage of votes obtained as 43%.
The figure dropped by 13% this time, where then-independent politician Hsu Ching-hua was recruited to run in the election on behalf of the ruling KMT.
The party was hoping for a low voter turnout rate and believed it would have the edge.
But the voter turnout rate was only 33% and the KMT didn't see the result it expected.
