Abusing Health Care
The National Health Insurance in Taiwan has provided the public with affordable doctor visits, and now, some are found to be abusing these benefits.
According to last year's statistics, one patient went to the clinic for 438 times in one year, hiking up the bill to 290,000 NT dollars.
And she's not alone when it comes to taking advantage of the resources. Now, the Bureau of National Health Insurance is monitoring the 30, 000 individuals who have received medical treatments over 100 times last year.
Usually, it's a long wait to see doctors in big and established hospitals.
It's not uncommon to see people flocking to big hospitals when they are in need of medical service.
Taiwan's national health insurance is a convenient and affordable system for the public.
But some people try to rip off the system by paying unnecessary visits to hospitals. The Bureau of National Health Insurance discovered that last year, a female patient made 438 hospital visits in one year and the overall medical expense was about NT$290,000.
And another individual checked out 119 different hospitals last year, with 372 hospital visits.
The medical expense was about NT$190,000.
More than 30,000 people, who have visited hospitals for more than 100 times last year, will be on the bureau's watch list.
According to the bureau, individuals with exceedingly high number of hospital visits will be consulted through phone calls or visits to see whether the patients need to receive frequent medical treatment or not.
Confirmed abusers of the health insurance will be subject to a service constraint from November that only pays their medical expenses at certain assigned hospitals.
