Recently, we're seeing a sharp decline of land crabs in Kenting, which is extremely odd, because the egg-laying season falls from July to September. CTS reporters have followed the local experts to uncover the cause behind this abnormal phenomenon.

With a flashlight, the community guide invites visitors to explore the ecology of land crabs.

From July to September, around the dates of the full moon, land crabs would lay eggs from 7 to 9 o'clock in the evening.

Kids find many of them next to the road and even a lot more could be found in a mountain ditch in the neighborhood.

These land crabs live in the forest on the mountain slopes on the other side of the road.

During the breeding season, they would cross the road and crawl up to the beach to lay eggs.

However, the process could risk their lives.

Many crabs can be seen crushed by cars.

Even if they make it through the road, they will have to climb the wall.

The journey to lay eggs near water is less than 100 meters.

But the way how human beings live is making the trip extremely difficult for the crabs.

Local residents believe the community doesn't provide enough protection to land crabs laying egg and urge the authorities to crack down on any business or person that damages the crabs' habitats and to build an ecological corridor or even implement traffic controls during the peak egg-laying period to minimize the casualties.
