Green Sea Turtles, an endangered species, have been recently seen laying eggs on the beaches of Lan-yu, an adjacent island of Taiwan. And the number of eggs laid this month is two to three times higher than usual, which excited conservationists.

This female green turtle sneaks up on the beach in the middle of the night, digging a large hole with her flippers, and then lays eggs into it. Such a scene is common in Lan Yu this summer, and in fact it's more common than usual, with 16 mother green turtles having laid eggs on shore since July 1st, more than tripling last year's number.

And its likely that more green turtles are still to come. Experts say that consecutive days of hot weather has allowed plankton to thrive, offering a richer source of food for these turtles, and that may explain the increase in the species reproductive activities. And experts are also warning that, while it's exciting to see these turtles laying eggs, tourists and observers should be careful not to get too close to them, for our shy green friends may very easily be scared away.
