FIRST-EVER BLACK CAVIAR EATING CONTEST?
Russian caviar producers organized what they called the first ever black caviar speed eating world championship last Friday.
Twelve participants were chosen for the contest out of hundreds of night club visitors in central Moscow. Each of the competitor was offered 500g of black caviar, which is worth for an average of 1,300 US dollars and the first one who finishes the caviar is the winner.
According to the competition hosts, all caviar for the event costs about 70,000 US dollars.
It took the winner, who introduced himself as Alexander from Moscow, one minute and eight seconds to finish 500g of black caviar. As a prize he was given a glass plaque inscribed with the competition logo and 10,000 rouble (about 340 USD) gift certificate to spend at an internet shop.
Alexander said that he usually ate black caviar during holidays or celebrations, while other participants said that they enjoyed eating the caviar, even though they didnt win.
Russia resumed its official exports of sturgeon caviar to the European Union in February 2011, after a nine-year ban to save the tsar fish from extinction. However, the ban did not stop the poachers, and the illegal black caviar could sell for about 1,600 US dollar per kilogram in Moscow and 5,000 US dollars in European markets.
