TRADING TRASH FOR FOOD?
Thousands of Mexicans gathered in Mexico City's Chapultepec Park on Sunday to contribute their effort for protection of environment and promote local agricultural businesses. Participants were able to exchange goods such as glass, paper and aluminum for "green points" which can then be used to purchase agricultural products such as lettuce, cactus, spinach, tomatoes, and flowers, among other things.
More than 3,000 people brought in recyclable goods to trade fresh agricultural products and plants as part of the city's first official eco-friendly trading activity.
Lillian Haugen, one of the event's organizers, said the event aimed to promote recycling awareness and place a value on discarded items.
"The objective is to educate and inform people, so that they know and recognize that recyclable goods that are set aside properly to begin to accumulate, and if they are separated correctly, they have value. Mexico City has very big problems with trash accumulation. This program was created to stimulate and give them (residents) incentives, so they can learn to recycle,"
"Here people can bring their solid recyclables, and exchange them for 'green points'. This helps encourage people to think of the exchange as tangible. They then can go to market section, and exchange their green points for agricultural products,"
All the agricultural products were grown by small local growers in the Mexico City metropolitan area, who got the chance to promote their own produce through the event.
People were asked to bring a minimum of one kilogram of recyclable goods, but no more than 10 kilograms so that everyone can bring home some of the plant products from the event.
