NATIONWIDE PROTESTS AS FUEL PRICE SOARS
he nationwide strike in Nigeria entered its second day yesterday as protesters took to the streets to show anger over the ending of fuel subsidies. They criticized President Goodluck Jonathan for removing fuel subsidy to reduce government spending, an act that will double citizens' fuel costs.
People across the country joined the nationwide indefinite strike held in many cities, including in the capital city, Lagos. Chris John, telecommunications worker, said: "They think that we are foolish but we are not. We are responsible Nigerians and we are speaking our minds and our mind is this: they need to reverse the fuel price."
In response, President Jonathan says he won't back down and said that the money saved will be used to invest in building local refineries.
Shops, offices, schools and petrol stations around the country closed on the first day of the national strike. Police fired tear gas on protesters in Kano, the second largest city in Nigeria, reportedly killing two and wounding many. Another demonstrator died in a clash with police in Lagos. A night-time curfew is also enforced in Kano.
For nearly 160 million Nigerians who live on less than 2 dollars a day, the cancel of fuel subsidy means sharp price increases on their daily commodities and transportations, which will make their life more difficult.
