AIRLINES TO BE CHARGED FOR CARBON POLLUTION?
According to the European Court of Justice, EU's plan to levy a carbon tax on airlines is valid, which suggests that all airlines flying to and from the 27 states of the European Union will have to pay an emission tax, starting January 1st, 2012.
US, Canadian and other carriers have opposed to the plan by arguing that the charges violate climate change and aviation pacts.
Four Chinese airlines have also expressed their disagreement, saying that the measure will increase their cost by 95 million euros, which is around 124 million US dollars.
In a bid to combat climate change, EU has launched the Emission Trading System (ETS) since 2005, charging industries with high carbon emissions, from oil refineries, power stations, steel works, to now, airlines.
Even though the US House of Representatives passed a measure two months ago directing the US transport secretary to prohibit US carriers from participating in the scheme if it were to come into force, the EU has been firm on its stance that it will not succumb to US pressure regarding carbon emission tax on airlines.
