Fukang Fishing harbor faces
The Fukang Fishing harbor of Taitung County has been around for 57 years. Due to the rising tourism in Green island and Lanyu, the harbor's communal dock for passenger ferries and fishing boats is too small to accommodate the number of 700,000 visitors each year.
Thus, the Taitung County government has been granted the fund of 1.4 billion NTD from the central government for the harbor expansion project.
But the Public Construction Commission evaluated that the conditions were too rough and the renovation project would not be sufficient.
However, the central government-approved funding was valid until last year. Now the local government needs to return the fund, while local residents hope the central government could assist the county to re-plan the harbor expansion project.
Minister of Transportation and Communications Mao Chi-kuo paid an inspection visit to the Fukang fishing harbor in Taitung County in last May where he promised to coordinate related agencies to help assist the 1.4 billion worth harbor expansion project.
But the Public Construction Commission evaluted that the geography of the trench is too rough and not suitable for expansion.
The funding of 1.4 billion NTD was only valid until the end of last year and will have to be returned to the central government, this fruastrated the Taitung County government.
It can only propose another improvement project to cope with the situation.
The Fukang fishing harbor has been around for 57 years.
In the past two years, the harbor has received more than 700,000 visitors each year, who visited the Green Island and Lanyu via the harbor.
When it's the peak season for tourism, more than 10 passenger ferries and 100 fishing boats share the same dock, it is very crowded.
The expansion project was overruled and it really disappointed fishermen who hope the central government can revive the expansion project and solve the crowded harbor problem once and for all.
