The Farm Villages Revival Act, passed less than a month ago, will devote 150 billion NT dollars to agricultural villages around Taiwan for landscape and facility improvements. But many scholars are concerned about the efficiency of its budget execution, advising the government to spend wisely according to the actual needs of each farm village.

The new type of guava, called "Red Diamond", which tastes no less than the popular pearl guava, is the latest success of the Ma Jin-Tseng family.

The Ma family began growing guava three generations ago, at the Jinshan village of Yenchao township in Kaohsiung County.

Ma Jin-tseng returned home to join farming work as the competition from chain stores beat his optical shop to the market.

So he went back to the village a couple years ago and has since devoted to cultivating new breeds.

While the Jinshan village takes pride in the Red Diamond guava, the budget for guava plantation, production and marketing was not much in last year's trial farming village rebirth program.

In reponse to speculations, President Ma Ying-jeou says his administration has other measures for industry development and the program is mainly to improve farming village environment.

Although the President stressed to keep the features of farming village around, there are many modern hardware and facilities in the community after the trial program ended.

Some scholars say it's hard to believe the government's promise and remind the administration to slow down on the execution of the program since cultivating farming village planners is not easy.

Carrying the plan too hastily would only result in a waste of money and damage the landscapes of farming villages.
